Beginning ESL/ELL Students
In an increasingly mobile world, teachers are seeing more and more students arriving in their classrooms who have recently moved from other countries from around the world. Often, they have little or no English skills. Some students have come from areas where they have not had schooling due to civil unrest, family obligations, gender restrictions and a variety of other possible reasons. As a result, their literacy levels are extremely low and they do not have the basic skills other students their age may have elsewhere. In addition to teaching the approved curriculum for their age groups, teachers are given the task of increasing the language skills of these students. Many teachers are not trained in this area and therefore have difficulties in knowing where to start.
This website has been created by an intern teacher as a professional project in an attempt to provide basic resources, background information, and possible activities which may help them to work with their English Language Learning students. A weekly blog has also been added in which the intern records her experiences in working with a young ESL student on developing his vocabulary on "Classroom Objects".
